Seminar on Corporate Entrepreneurship

UA&P SMN-CME cordially invites you to learn how to transform your organization into an enterprise and how to be a corporate entrepreneur rather than a corporate manager.

We have a seminar entitled Corporate Entrepreneurship, scheduled on October 30, 2009 from 1:30 PM to 5:00 PM at PLDT Hall, University of Asia and the Pacific, Pearl Drive, Ortigas Center, Pasig City.

Corporate Entrepreneurship is a seminar specially designed for busy top management teams. All of the seminar’s key points are covered and all of the application exercises are included. Support for Young Entrepreneurs (YE) magazine

The sophomore students of the Entrepreneurial Management Program of The University of Asia and the Pacific (UA&P) of which you are still part of will be once again publishing one of our course’s highlight, the “Young Entrepreneurs”, with this year’s theme “ehEMplo”.

This year, the magazine aims to divert from the usual aspect of a business magazine, into a publication that captures the usually unexplored side of being an entrepreneur: a provider, a strategist, a student, an artist, a leader. It intends to give a glimpse of a competitive and competent tycoon in order to inform, inspire and encourage its readers to be, aside from being a financier, a socially relevant member of society. To be able to do this, the magazine will feature articles that coincide with what an example does which is to illustrate, lead, direct and inspire.

YE Magazine’s 2009 issue shall be released and distributed to all the EM students UA&P as well as esteemed faculty members, alumni donors and sponsors of the EM Program during its formal launch come October.

In this regard, we would like to humbly ask for your assistance so that we may cover the expenditures necessary for publication by making financial contributions for this timely project thus keep our treasured tradition moving. Here are our advertising rates:

Help us name our alumni e-mail newsletter!

Recently, the Office of Alumni Affairs (OAA) was able to get a non-profit grant from VerticalResponse, one of the world's top e-mail marketing firms. What does that mean? We're finally going to have an e-mail newsletter! Yey!

But we're stumped. What do we name do we use? We already did a survey in the UA&P alumni Yahoo! group a year ago and got these results:

UA&P ACmonthly - 0 votes
Dragon's Eye - 4 votes
Dragon's Lair - 2 votes
Alumni's Homebase - 1 vote
The Red & Gold/UA&P Bulletin - 1 vote
UNITAS e-gazette - 1 vote

Unfortunately, these votes are too few to use as basis for such a grand decision. We hope you can help us by either 1) suggesting other names or 2) voting for any of the suggested names. Please place your suggested names/votes as comments to this post.

Thanks a lot for your responses!

Students welcomed in Incorporation Rites

The University held its Incorporation Rites last August 13 to welcome the freshman batch of 2009. The annual event was organized to officially receive new students into the University. It was marked by the imposition of the beca, signifying the student's affiliation to a particular school or unit. Each student received a beca in the color of its unit—white for CAS, yellow for IT, and drab for EM.

Mr. Joseph Parcon of the Office of Student Affairs officiated the ceremony. He likened UA&P students to "hardworking sailors on the galleon that is the University of Asia and the Pacific," challenging the freshman batch to meet the high expectations set by the University.

Atty. Jose Rafael E. Agaab of batch 2001 was invited to give a talk to the CAS freshmen at Li Seng Giap, while Mr. Haresh Daswani spoke to the EM and IT freshmen who were at the Dizon Auditorium. Atty. Agaab recounted his experience as a student and emphasized the importance of developing and nurturing the virtue of diligence in one's professional life. On the other hand, Mr. Daswani said that students should find a good balance between studies and recreation.

SCM dean, faculty member given Academic Research Awards

School of Communication (SCM) Dean Dr. Jerry Kliatchko and Assistant Professor Dr. Caterina Lorenzo-Molo received this year’s Academic Research Awards during the University Day celebration last August 14.

Dr. Kliatchko was accorded with the award for his article, “The Primacy of the Consumer in IMC: Espousing a Personalist View and Ethical Implications,” published in the Journal of Marketing Communications (Vol. 15 No. 2).

Dr. Lorenzo-Molo, on the other hand, was awarded for her article, “Why Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Remains a Myth: The Case of the Philippines,” printed in the Asian Business and Management (Vol. 8 No. 2).

The Academic Research Awards are given annually during the University Day celebration. They aim to recognize faculty members with outstanding researches recently published in select academic journals.

CAS/IPE faculty holds third colloquium

The CAS/IPE Faculty Development Program held its Third Faculty Colloquium last August 12. Three faculty members shared the insights they gained from their research as well as from other experts in their field.

Dr. Lani Junio of the Department of Philosophy presented the basic ideas she culled from an Acton Institute conference she attended on the “Foundations of a Free and Virtuous Society.” The conference defined a free and virtuous society as “one where the inherent dignity of the human person is recognized and respected, where individuals can use their freedom in a manner consistent with virtue and common good.”

Dr. Elizabeth Urgel of the Department of Pacific Rim Studies presented a summary of her study on "Owning Christianity: The Case of Couples for Christ and El Shaddai," which she presented during the 3rd SSEASR Conference on Waters in South and Southeast Asia: Interaction of Culture and Religion in Bali, Indonesia. She showed how the two Catholic movements have helped the Catholic Church flourish through locally developed ways of spreading the faith.

Coach Luigi Bercades of the PE Department described functional training, which comprises exercises specifically designed to improve performance or functional activities outside the training environment. Founded on the design of the human body and how it moves, functional training can result in the improvement of quality of life.

SED faculty member listed as PAP specialist in developmental psychology

Dr. Angelito Antonio, Assistant Professor of the School of Education and Human Development (SED), has obtained certification from the Psychological Association of the Philippines (PAP) as a Specialist in Developmental Psychology.

PAP is the largest organization of psychologists in the Philippines. It is committed to the promotion of excellence in the teaching, research, and practice of psychology.

According to SED Dean Celerino Tiongco, "[Dr. Antonio] belongs to the first batch of PAP's Certified Specialists in Developmental Psychology -- a distinction that SED considers important because of its repositioning as a higher educational institution offering degree programs built upon three areas of faculty concentration: education, psychology, and human capital development."
